A bank teller is a customer service agent responsible for processing routine transactions that customers carry out at banks. A bank teller shapes the first impression a customer will receive at a bank. Bank tellers handle large amounts of money on a daily basis and must possess the ability to work with a high degree of accuracy.
Bank tellers receive and distribute money to customers on a routine daily basis. Basic duties include setting up new banking accounts, closing existing checking and savings accounts, receiving and processing deposits, handling withdrawals and loan payments, cashing checks, and transferring adequate funds between accounts per customer request.
Daily Monetary Transactions
Bank tellers must also record every banking transaction processed each day. Deposit slips must be stamped with the appropriate date, time, and total amount. All deposit slip transactions must be authenticated by recording a customer withdrawal on a banking ledger, and a customer’s identity must be validated by requesting photo identification or comparing signatures.
Before the close of a business day, transactions must be calculated and the contents of a teller’s cash drawer counted. Funds should accurately reflect those recorded on a settlement sheet. Bank tellers are normally required to remain on their shift until all monies are accounted for.
In addition to the essential duties a bank teller is expected to perform, other tasks may also include cashing payroll checks, answering calls regarding customer accounts, distributing traveler’s checks, and exchanging correct foreign currency.
Bank tellers must be friendly and approachable and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills when dealing with customers. Being able to multi-task in a busy work environment is also a necessity. Bank tellers should also be detail-orientated, organized individuals, demonstrating strong math and accounting skills.
Bank tellers acquiring specialized skills and experience may be responsible for a sole duty such overseeing daily bank vault transactions.
