Lavender grows well in many states across America.

Dress up your small front or back yard by planting native plants from your area. You may only need a few compact plants to create a more appealing yard. Choose plants that naturally grow slowly, or select dwarf shrubs and plants. Avoid over-sized trees and shrubs because they can take up too much space. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Winding Path

    • Install a three to four foot wide winding path from your gate to your front door. You can use flag stone, flat rocks or other types of stone to make this path. Plant your favorite flowers, herbs or dwarf shrubs on both sides of the outside border of the path, or just plant creeping dwarf rosemary along the sides of your walking path. This plant grows well in most areas, is easy to care for, grows up to 12 inches tall, and produces blueish-pink flowers. Creeping rosemary enjoys full sun and both acidic and alkaline soils.

    Flower Border

    • Small yards have limited space, but there is always some room along the border of your home. Install raised flower bed boxes along the entire border of your house and plant native flowers in the soil. Prepare the soil by adding 5 inches or more of compost or fertilizer. You can also mix in some of your own soil as long it's not too sandy or clay-like. Plant colorful flowers such as tulip bulbs or daisies in the spring.

Green Grass, Roses and a White Picket Fence

    • A white picket fence and green grass is a simple way to work with limited space. Plant grass seed on the available space in your front and back yard. Install a white picket fence along the border of your yard. Choose select places in your yard to plant small rose bushes. Then install a circular border picket fence around each rose bush so you always have an idea of how far back to prune the plant. You may need to prune often if your yard is especially small.

Small Tree Border and Dwarf Shrubs

    • Plant small trees such as lemon or lime trees along the border of your fence. This plan dresses up a small yard by creating a panoramic view of picturesque trees. Plant dwarf shrubs in between each tree.
