A List of Supplies Needed for an Elk Hunting Trip
Elk hunting is a popular sport for many hunters who enjoy the thrill of a big game hunt. There are many types to choose from such as guided hunts, semi-guided hunts and self-guided hunts. There are also a number of hunting clubs and outfitter facilities across the United States that offer these options. Aside from the obvious equipment such as guns and ammunition, there are a number of other supplies you should be familiar with and bring on your trip.

Clothing
-
It is important to remember to bring warm clothing with you on an elk hunting trip. Elk hunting seasons are different from state to state, but the majority of them are in the fall and winter months when the weather is extremely cold, especially in northern states such as Wyoming and Colorado where elk hunting is quite popular. Items to bring include long johns, gloves, wool socks, coats, hats and rain gear such as poncho's or raincoats. This type of clothing can help protect against hypothermia and frost bite, and it all comes in camouflage colors to help blend in with the forest.
Camping gear
-
If your elk hunting package doesn't include lodging and you are planning on camping during your hunt, a tent sure comes in handy. Make sure to select an all-season tent made of sturdy material that will keep out rain and snow. Tents also come in earthy or camouflage colors to help blend in with the environment. A warm sleeping bag is also very important, even if you aren't staying in a tent, as many of the basic hunting cabins don't include bunks, or may not have enough bunks for everyone in your group. Other camping equipment to bring includes a flashlight and a compass, especially if you are going on a self-guided hunt. If your hunting package doesn't include meals than it is also important to being cooking utensils, pots and pans, a camping stove or a barbecue grill and groceries to last the duration of your trip. If cooking is not in your plans, than non-perishable food items such such as cereal, bread and peanut butter are other options.

Game bag
-
A game bag is a very important supply needed on an elk hunt. While many guided hunts may provide these for you in the services, if you are on a semi-guided or a self guided hunt, you will be responsible for field dressing your own elk and will need something to transport it. These bags can be purchased at any hunting supply store. The are heavy-duty and will protect meat against bugs and dirt. They are also odor free and tear resistant.
