Medical transcriptionists turn dictation into documentation for hospitals and health care centers, physicians’ offices and transcription companies. Some transcriptionists work from home according to their schedules and income needs. Pursuing certification in medical transcription is ideal for individuals with “administrative or clinical background[s]” who want to change careers, says Marian Court College. Job prospects are bright for the field, as employment opportunities have been projected to grow “21% to 35% faster than the average” and by 49 percent overall through the end of 2010, notes Northeast Technical Institute.

  1. Bristol Community College

    • Bristol Community College offers a 29-credit, 10-course program in medical transcription that covers computer skills, voice recognition, medical terms and how to produce quality documentation. Students also learn office procedures, such as conduct surrounding patient privacy. Graduates earn a certificate in medical transcription and are eligible to sit the exam for national certification.

In addition, most of the program’s credits transfer to Bristol Community College’s office administration--medical administrative associate degree program. Many associate degree program graduates are then eligible for guaranteed admission to related programs at institutions in Massachusetts’s public university system.
