Self Evaluation for Performance Review Tips
Self evaluations might be included in job performance reviews. By providing your employer with a self-assessment, you achieve several ends. You remind your employer of your accomplishments throughout the year. You let your employer know any aspects of your job that you feel could use improvement and open an opportunity for discussion. You set the stage for planning the next year. You can prepare properly for a self evaluation with some helpful tips.
-
Read the Form
-
If you are being asked to complete a self evaluation, a form is usually given to you for you to complete. Before attempting to complete the evaluation, read the instructions carefully. Take notes on a separate sheet of paper. You are about to have the opportunity to detail your strengths, achievements, areas for development and opportunities for improvement.
The self evaluation process has similarities to taking a test. Some people develop test anxiety and freeze. By reading the form, thinking about it and re-reading it before you complete so much as your name, you will be more likely to follow the instructions as they are written.
Get Friendly Feedback
-
After you have reviewed the self evaluation form and written answers on a separate sheet of paper, talk to select co-workers one at a time. Choose individuals you trust. Ideally, you can speak with coworkers in your own department and other departments. Your interactions will help you see how they perceive you. Offer to share insights on their self evaluations in return for their comments on yours.
Ask for their comments about your performance, including examples. If they remember specific accomplishments, note them. If they identify strengths, write those, too. If you sense areas where you would like to improve, call those to their attention. They may have ideas on ways you can improve your interactions or performance. Even if these are difficult to hear, the fact that you note them in your self evaluation will demonstrate to your employer that you care enough to listen to well-founded criticism.
-
Give Examples
-
As you complete your evaluation, be specific and factual. Instead of saying that you participate as a team member, explain how and when you do these things. Use key phrases that have meaning to your employer. Saying that you worked until midnight for three nights with John, Ann and Joe to meet the Sept. 17 shipping deadline on the City Service account will mean more to your employer than you mumbling that you go the distance. If you saved the department money because they did not have to a hire a temporary worker, if you train new employees, if you discover and implement cost saving and material saving techniques, mention them.
Rate Yourself
-
Before rating yourself, re-read the instructions. Once you are satisfied that you understand each question and every word in it, answer objectively. Rate yourself based on results, not intentions. If you feel you make a significant difference in your company, you will know by now why that is true. If you believe you contribute to customer satisfaction, you will have examples to back up your assertion. If you take the lead on projects, if you are valued by your team, if you make a contribution to department goals, you will have facts and details to substantiate your self-rating.
