Microsoft Office 2008 Proofing Tools
Microsoft Office 2008 offers four main proofing tools: spelling, grammar, thesaurus and hyphenation. All four tools are available in the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Swedish and Swiss German. All but grammar is included in these languages: Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian (Bokml), Portuguese and Spanish. The Norwegian Nynorsk edition checks only spelling and hyphenation. The Japanese edition checks only rules for full grammar and consistency.

Configure
-
Proofing tools for non-English languages must be installed on your computer before you can use them. If you have an English version of Office 2008, all other languages are included, although they may not necessarily be installed. If they are, the tools are stored in Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Shared Applications/Proofing Tools/. If you're only going to use the English version, you can save hard drive space by performing a custom install of Office, which will not install fonts and data for the other languages.
Spelling
-
The spell checker is one of the most popular features in Word, working in the background and offering suggestions as you type. If the spell checker highlights a word it does not recognize, you can add it to the dictionary. You can also add custom dictionaries, which must be installed in this directory: /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/.

Grammar
-
The Office grammar and style checker operates in the background and suggests changes as you type, relying on various rules depending on the language. If you're using a custom dictionary, the grammar checker does not work. You can only use this feature with the built-in dictionary that comes with Office. The grammar option is only available in about half the languages in the Office 2008 line.
Thesaurus
-
The Proofing Tools thesaurus provides synonyms and word meanings. You can check for a word replacement by right-clicking on the word. The context menu will show an option called "Synonyms," which will display a list of substitute words. You can also access the thesaurus from the Reference Tools window.
Hyphenation
-
You can operate the hyphenation tool automatically or manually, which is the default. By dividing words, hyphenation will keep the width of every line in your Word document at a fixed length.
