Usenet Search Tools

Newsreaders and web-based Usenet search tools allow users to sift through the millions of messages, images and other files in the Usenet system. These tools don't provide access to Usenet, however, and to use them or their search results, you need access to a free or commercially maintained Usenet server, which may be provided by your ISP.

  1. Xnews

    • XNews is a freeware Usenet reader with a friendly interface that masks a wide range of application tools. Basic newsgroup filter systems are available to allow users to search and retrieve Usenet news items that match their search criteria, while the platform provides the ability to search and sort multiple news servers as well as filtering and downloading of pictures and other binary files, all with the flexibility of advanced search features such as more detailed filtering.

    Newzleech

    • Users who want to search Usenet's massive clearinghouse of binary files--pictures, movies, sound recordings--but don't have the use for content filtering may opt for Newzleech. The web-based search engine indexes Usenet binaries, allowing for a Google-like search of the news forums. Results are displayed as an index of .NZB files, which need an NZB-enabled newsgroup downloader to open and download the contents from Usenet.

    GrabIt

    • GrabIt is a freeware newsreader application designed to download Usenet information, skipping the header information to accelerate search speed. While the application allows for search and retrieval of binaries, it can also manage newsgroup posts and filter subscriptions based on user preferences and search criteria.

    Binabled

    • Although its search criteria are limited, Binabled's straightforward web interface provides an intuitive method to search Usenet. The service allows users to search single newsgroups or the breadth of Usenet, filter by upload date and file age and popularity. Binabled delivers results in .NZB file format for download and assembly by another program as well as offering subscribers the ability to download files directly to a shopping cart.

    News Rover

    • The commercial newsreader provides the typical newsreader functionality of constant, active searches and user-directed searches, and can sort and thread newsgroup communications as well as binaries. Additional features include password protection, encryption of downloaded files and exclusion-based parameters to help filter spam and unwanted messages from your message stream.
