Jobs for the Persian Language

If you speak Persian, also known as Farsi, your language skills are in high demand due to expanding commerce between English-speaking countries and Arab nations, military involvement in the Middle East and booming economies in the Persian Gulf. When applying for jobs, be sure to provide your level of spoken and written fluency and list any other languages you speak.

  1. Military Jobs

    • The United States military and other Western nations’ armed forces are hiring fluent speakers of Persian for translation, interpretation and cultural training positions. Positions range from those based in the U.S. to those on the ground in the Middle East working with troops or military relief providing interpretation and simultaneous translation and document translation. Cultural trainers are also sought to help prepare American troops for their stays in combat areas and in peace zones. The military is also hiring fluent speakers to teach the language at its language schools and immersion programs. Salaries begin at around $25,000.

    Teaching

    • Many schools, colleges, universities and other institutions of learning hire Persian language speakers to teach the language. For most college and university jobs, you will not only need to be fluent in the language but also hold at least a Master's degree in it; a PhD is usually preferred. The US government is also seeking Persian teachers. Teaching the language consists of not only teaching vocabulary and sentence structure, but also cultural norms and informal language use. Salaries in public colleges can begin around $4000 for one course (average adjunct pay); the government range is $36,430.00 to $127,042.00

    Translation

    • Translators and interpreters of Persian are in high demand in large cities like Washington, D.C. and New York., and can work either through translation service agencies or on a freelance basis. Some translators specialize in particular areas, like business, medicine, academia or technology, while others are generalists. Translators and interpreters usually charge by the page for written documents or by the hour for interpreting. Rates can start at 25-cents per word in the original document for a translator or $75 an hour for an interpreter.
