  1. Educational and Training Requirements

    • Most health educators are required to have a Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree. However, some are hired with a bachelor's degree in health education or a related field, such as anthropology and sociology, and at least two years of experience working in the public health field. Practicing health educators are required to continue their education to maintain and increase professional skills.

      According to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, health teachers who voluntarily become a Certified Health Education Specialist develop a sense of pride and accomplishment. The CHES designation also attests to your knowledge and skills, which helps employers identify qualified job applicants.

    Job Requirements

    • The main job requirements of health teachers are planning and directing health education programs and lectures for schools, companies and community groups. You develop health goals with your pupils and assist in the promotion of good health and disease prevention. Additional professional requirements include preparing and distributing educational materials on health issues such as sexually transmitted diseases, smoking and drug abuse; planning exhibits for health fairs; and conducting lectures and health forum discussions. Health educators also supervise and delegate duties to assistants.

    Skill Requirements

    • Health educators must have particular skills. You must possess communications skills because you present educational information to groups of people. Leadership is another required skill because you coordinate and direct the work of others, including students and assistants. Organizational skills are required to plan, implement and administer health education programs, which can be time-consuming and strenuous.
