Room Separator Ideas

If you are decorating or rearranging your home, room separators can be some of the most powerful tools in your arsenal. A room separator can subdivide a large, open concept loft apartment into smaller rooms, making it feel more like a home. Room separators can also make very small homes feel larger if you devote each segment of a room to its own purpose. Separators also add an element of privacy. If you have two children sharing a room, for example, a separator can help each child feel as though she has a space she can call her own.

Hanging Curtain

  • Curtains can be used for more than just shading windows. For a room shared by more than one child, try hanging a curtain rod in the middle of the room. The curtain can be closed at night or while the children are doing homework and opened during playtime. Giving the children a retractable room separator allows time for privacy without allowing them to become isolationist.

Shoji Screens

  • Shoji screens are the best possible room separators for a home with an Asian flair. With their latticework and rice paper, Shoji screens are unmistakably Japanese. Shoji screens manufactured as room dividers are generally as tall as an adult and hinged into three sections. This allows Shoji screens to be folded and moved when necessary. In spite of their size, Shoji screens are light enough to be moved by one person without assistance.

Acrylic Glass

  • Heat sheets of acrylic glass and make them into shapes for a room separator that segments a room without blocking the view or light. Create loops in the acrylic before it cools, or drill holes after the cooling process is complete. Hang the glass in a doorway using fishing line.

Common Household Items

  • With a little ingenuity, many of the items that you already have around the house can make excellent room separators. For example, try using a wall mirror as a room separator in a small environment. A mirror can also scatter light in a room that receives little sunlight. An unused bed sheet is also suitable as a temporary room separator in a pinch.
