Church Activities and Crafts for Children

Church activities help children understand the essentials of faith in God in a creative way

Activities help interest children in spiritual things and teach them how faith in God is essential to all aspects of their lives. When thinking of activities to do with them, consider the ages and personalities of the children. You can also read children's religious magazines to get ideas on what kinds of activities to have in your classroom. The activities should have a strong moral message to them without being too preachy. The activities should also be fun and engaging for the children.

Bible Character Identification

If you're interested in having the children learn from the lives of biblical characters, you can have an activity in which each child has to choose which character he identifies with the most and why. Give each student a list of important biblical characters and their life stories. Include their weaknesses and failures as well as their triumphs and strengths. For example, a child may decide to identify with Moses because, like him, the child struggles with a speech impairment and a lack of confidence when attempting big tasks.

Scrapbook of Life Lessons

You can take all of the class assignments that the children completed during the past few months in Sunday School and turn them into a scrapbook with the theme being about life lessons that the children learned as a result of the assignments. Have each child write two or three pages of paragraphs which state the lessons she learned and how she can apply them to her daily life as she gets older. You can also have the children cut out words from religious magazines such as "hope," "generosity," "love" and "heaven" and place them on the front of the scrapbook along with some large drawings of flowers or animals.

Religious Skit

Another idea is to put on a skit that deals with a particular lesson in class. If you taught a lesson on the importance of having compassion for the less fortunate, you can have a skit in which a group of children get together and organize a food and clothing drive for neighbors who recently lost their jobs.
