The top NCAA lacrosse programs are located on the East Coast, long the hotbed for this sport in our country. From 2010 through 2014 Duke University won three of the five national titles. Dating back to 2000, Syracuse University (five national titles), the University of Virginia (three titles), Johns Hopkins University (two titles), and Loyola University of Maryland (one title) have also been most prominent. Duke and Syracuse also ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the 2014 Ratings Percentage Index and Virginia, Johns Hopkins and Loyola were all in the top 10.
Duke University, Durham, North Carolina
The Blue Devils won national titles in 2010, 2013 and 2014 and played for the championship in 2005 and 2007. "You know, it's Duke," Blue Devil head coach Jon Danowski told NCAA.com after winning the 2014 title. "We have this tremendous opportunity, we have a tremendous support staff, strength staff, sports performance staff, sports psychologist. We have so many people who are a part, who their job is just to help individual students reach their potential."
Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York
Decades after NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown dominated the sport for Syracuse, the Orange remain a national power. They won NCAA titles in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2009 and reached the championship game in 2001 and 2013. They went to the Final Four 22 years in a row during one stretch. "I don't think you're ever going to see anything like that ever again," ESPN analyst Quint Kessenich told Syracuse.com.
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia
The Cavaliers won NCAA titles in 2003, 2006 and 2011. They ranked ninth in RPI in 2014 and lost to Johns Hopkins in the first round of the playoffs that season. Under coach Dom Starsia, they reached the Final Four 13 times in his first 21 seasons at the helm. He has won more games than any coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history.
Johns Hopkins University. Baltimore, Maryland
This storied program won the 2005 and 2007 NCAA titles and reached the championship game in 2003 and 2008 as well. Overall the Blue Jays have won nine championships and played in 18 title games. The Lacrosse Museum and National Hall of Fame is located on the school's campus. The Blue Jays upset Virginia in the 2014 playoffs before losing to Duke in the second round. It finished 10th in the RPI.
Loyola University, Baltimore, Maryland
The Greyhounds beat the University of Maryland 9-3 to win the 2012 NCAA title. Loyola won 18 games that season, tying a NCAA record, and returned to the playoff bracket in 2013 and 2014 -- when it finished sixth in the RPI.
