Microbiology Research Grants

Corporate foundations are a source of funding for microbiology research grants.

Private and corporate foundations dedicated to advancing research in the sciences, government organizations and international bodies dedicated to the study of microbiology are among the underwriters of microbiology research grants. Grants exist for microbiologists at all career stages, from those in undergraduate and graduate education to those establishing and continuing to develop careers.

  1. Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research

    • The Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research Fellowship Award is awarded to a researcher in the beginning of his career. The grantee must not have earned his doctoral degree more than a year prior to receiving the grant. If he does have a year of prior postdoctoral experience, grant funding continues for two years, otherwise the term of the award is three years. The benefits include a $43,000 stipend in the first year, with adjustments for dependent children and an additional $1,500 travel stipend. The stipend amount increases in subsequent years.

European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID)

    • The ESCMID/bioMerieux Research Grant in Clinical Microbiology targets a researcher early in her career whose research interests lie in the area of microbial resistance. The international grant serves to "advance laboratory practice and clinical diagnostics in Eastern Europe." The award is designated partially for research and partially for travel to the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

    American Society for Microbiology

    • The American Society for Microbiology funds grants for undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and scientists establishing and continuing careers. These awards include the Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Young Investigator Award, a $2,000 cash prize awarded to an exceptional scientist not more than five years into her postdoctoral career involving research into clinical microbiology or a related area including mechanisms of action of antimicrobial agents or mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents.

The society also offers the Raymond W. Sarber awards to an undergraduate student and a graduate student who demonstrate outstanding potential and excellence in research and are enrolled in microbiology-related academic programs. Other research grants include the Eli Lilly and Company Research Award for researchers younger than 45 and the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy Young Investigator Awards, granted to up to five scientists who are in the first three postdoctoral years of their careers.

    Global Probiotics Council

    • The Global Probiotics Council funds the Young Investigator Grant for Probiotics Research, an award intended for a researcher within the first five years of his scholarly and teaching career whose research delves into some aspect of gastrointestinal microbiology as related to probiotics. The grant amount is $50,000, not to be used for salaries or to fund travel. Supplies and technical necessities for the research are among the valid uses for the award.
