Fruit Trees That Grow Good in North West Oregon
Northwest Oregon's climate and fecund soil make it an excellent place for several types of fruit trees to grow. Since Portland, Oregon, has an average high temperature in July of 78 degrees Fahrenheit, according to CountryStudies.US, fruit trees do not face the dangers of extreme heat, and after a full winter of rain, the area seldom is afflicted by drought. Cherry

Cherry trees of many types thrive in northwest Oregon, especially near cities such as Portland and Hood River. It is not uncommon to see properties in Portland where cherry trees yield fruit in the summers. Among the varieties that grow in Oregon are Bing, Skeena and the yellow Rainier cherry. While sweet cherries are very popular, people also grow sour cherries, such as the Montmorency, for pies. Bing cherries
usually ripen in late June while other varieties are ready in July.

Another fruit tree that yields a summer crop in northwest Oregon is the peach tree. Two varieties most often grown in the region are the Suncrest and the Redhaven. Both are more resistant to diseases such as leaf blight and curl. Peaches are ready to be picked in late summer. People enjoy peaches fresh from the tree or can them and eat the preserved fruit in later months.

Apple trees in Oregon bear fruit in the fall. They are popular for snacking, preserving and cooking. The numerous apple cultivars that grow in northwest Oregon include Gala, Braeburn and Jonagold. Sour green Granny Smith apples are also popular for making pies.

The plum is another fruit tree that grows in northwestern Oregon. Ready to eat in the summer, plums make a great snack or can be dried into prunes. Both Japanese and European varieties of plum are grown in Oregon, such as the Shiro plum and the Italian plum.
