Career Internships in the Hotel Industry

Career Internships in the Hotel Industry thumbnail
Many hotel chains offer internships.

Career Internships offer valuable experience and can help you gain future employment. With its wide variety of jobs and worldwide locations, hotel internships are valuable tools when you hunt for a job after you graduate from college. Many hotels look to their interns first when seeking candidates for management positions. Also, as a hotel intern, students are able to try out a number of different jobs.

  1. Types of Hotel Internships

    • Experience the hotel industry by serving as an intern. Programs offered include operational and management departments like rooms, food and beverage, culinary, recreation, finance, housekeeping, maintenance, front desk, sales and service and human resources. Each area of focus contains several work areas. Rooms include reservations, front desk, housekeeping, bell attendants and valets and guest services. Food and Beverage includes restaurant wait staff, host/hostess, bartenders, banquet staff and pool service. Culinary includes buffets, bakery and hot and cold food. Recreation includes children's activities, pool activities, family activities and health clubs.

Some hotels, like the Red Roof Inn or the Four Seasons, also offer corporate internships that focus more on running the business instead of the hospitality end.

    Details of Hotel Internships

    • Serve as an intern for as little as two weeks during winter break to gain an understanding of the hotel industry and to determine areas of further interest. The typical duration of an internship ranges from six months to 18 months, depending on the focus and the hotel. Interniships are usually served during regular time off of school.

Apply for a hotel internship while in an undergraduate program in hospitality. Hotels look for students with a high interest, good grades and skills in dealing with people as well as problem-solving skills. Most hotel internships rotate students through different positions.

All internships are paid. Some include other benefits like low-cost or no-cost housing, college credit, cross-training and access to industry discounts when traveling during the internship.

Receive priority treatment in job positions after interning with a hotel chain.
