Requirements for a Medical Transcription Education

Medical transcriptionists play an important role in the health care industry.

Medical transcriptionists work in healthcare environments and are responsible for transcribing recordings and creating documents and reports. They are knowledgeable in medical terminology and have backgrounds in English grammar. Transcriptionists work behind the scenes in various settings to assure that patient records are accurate. A transcriptionist acts as a writer and editor for all recorded dictations.

Education

A secondary education is not required to become a medial transcriptionist. Required skills can be learned through training provided by an employer. However, to become more marketable in the job market, it is a good idea to take a formal course in medical transcription. Vocational schools, community colleges and private, post-secondary schools offer medical transcription classes and an opportunity to obtain a certificate or associate's degree in the field. Coursework typically takes six months to two years to complete, depending on the degree.

Students enrolled in the medical transcription program are required to take English grammar, medical terminology, pathology, anatomy, physiology and medical transcription. These classes will help them to understand the anatomy of the medical field.

Continuing Education

Continuing education programs help transcriptionists stay abreast of updates and changes in the medical field. These short classes can vary in duration from one day to one week, depending on the topic. Most employers encourage their employees to take advantage of continuing education programs and will even pay for it.

Certifications

Certification is not required to work as a medical transcriptionist but many employers prefer to employ transcriptionists with certification. After completing a medical transcription course, the graduate can become a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) through The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. A test is required to obtain this certification. After two years of experience, an RMT can become a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT). A test is also required to obtain this certification. Holders of both credentials must earn continuing education credits periodically to keep their certification up to date.

Professional Organizations

Medical transcriptionists who belong to professional associations are provided with continuing education opportunities and updated information through journals. Associations also give medical transcriptionists opportunities to network with other professionals from around the country. The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity provides members with a bimonthly journal, educational conferences, and discounted products. The association also administers tests for RMT and CMT certifications. Members of the Health Professions Institute are given medical transcription reference books as well as access to an online magazine. Other associations include American Health Information Management Association and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
