Massachusetts Dump Truck Driver Requirements

Massachusetts Dump Truck Driver Requirements thumbnail
Driving a dump truck requires additional testing beyond that of a normal license.

If you want to drive a dump truck in Massachusetts, you'll require additional testing and a special license. You need to be at least 18 years old to drive a dump truck intrastate (only in Massachusetts) and 21 in order to drive anywhere in the country. You'll also need to pass a physical exam once every two years that will check your sight and hearing.

  1. Class B CDL

    • A Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required in order to drive a dump truck. To obtain the license, you'll need to pass both a general knowledge test and a road test. The general knowledge test is made up of 50 questions and you must answer 40 or more correctly to pass. The cost for the general knowledge test as of June 2010 is $30. A Class B CDL will also allow you to drive all Class C and D vehicles.

    Knowledge Tests

    • You must prove that you know how to maintain and operate air brakes by passing an additional air brake test. Though not necessary, it's recommended by Massachusetts CDL Testing Requirements that you also take the hazardous materials test.

    Skills Test

    • Three parts make up the skills test: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection, Basic Vehicle Control and the On-Road Test. For the Pre-Trip Inspection, you need to inspect your own vehicle and explain to your examiner what you're inspecting and why. In the Basic Vehicle Control Test you must demonstrate that you can maneuver your Class B vehicle to the examiner's satisfaction. This part of the test will usually feature pylons and barriers.

    Road Test

    • You must complete a road test in order to earn a Class B CDL. You're responsible to supply a Class B vehicle that is both registered and insured. If you don't have access to a vehicle you may rent one. If you use a rented vehicle, you'll need written permission from the rental company allowing you to use their vehicle for a road test. You'll also need a sponsor who holds a Class B CDL. All vehicles must pass a safety inspection by the examiner.
