Printer Toner Ingredients

The computer printer is something that you might takes for granted. The printer first began as a dot matrix printer in the 1970s, and, over time, became the injet printer and the even the more sophisticated laser printer. Laser printers work because of toner. The ingredients in toner account for the color and the way words and images adhere to paper.

  1. Powder

    • The base ingredient of toner is a powder. This powder is magnetically charged. The powder itself is similar to talcum powder--the powder you use to prevent diaper rash on a baby's bottoms.

    Pigment

    • In order to get the colors on the toner, pigment is added to the toner.

    Plastic

    • Plastic is also an ingredient in the toner. The plastic is present because when it is melted, it adheres the toner to the paper.

    Iron Oxide

    • Iron oxide is 40 percent or the toner's ingredients. Iron oxide is rust.

    Fuser

    • As the paper passes through the fuser, the plastic melts, adhering the pigment to the paper.
