There are several sailing schools in the Caribbean.

Learning to sail the clear-blue waters of the Caribbean is any sailing enthusiast's dream. The many Caribbean islands feature several schools that teach sailing to individuals and groups. The Abaco Sailing School in the Bahamas, Sea Dog Sailing School in the British Virgin Islands, Fairwind Sailing School and the School of Ocean Sailing, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, offer courses that teach the essentials of safe sailing.

  1. Abaco Sailing School

    • Abaco Sailing School is located in Abaco in the Bahamas. It is the only sailing school in the Bahamas that is certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA), which is a leading authority on sailing schools and sailing courses. The school received a Gold Star rating from the ASA in 2005 and was considered an outstanding school in 2009. It offers three sailing courses: Basic Keelboat, Basic Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering. In each class, students learn the essentials of safe sailing with a Captain.

    Sea Dog Sailing

    • Although based in the United States, Sea Dog Sailing offers sailing classes in the British Virgin Islands. It is an ASA-certified sailing school and offers the following courses: Basic Coastal Cruising and/or Bareboat Chartering and Intermediate Coastal Cruising. As of June 2010, prices range from $1,595 to $1,750. However, to make a reservation, a non-refundable deposit of $500 must be paid by check or credit card. Classes are offered in January, February, March and November.

    Fairwind Sailing School

    • Fairwind Sailing School operates sailing classes from St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It also has a sailing school in Abaco, Bahamas. It is ASA-certified and offers the following courses: Basic Sailing, Bareboat Chartering, Advanced Sailing, Catamarans Sailing, Coastal and Celestial Navigation. Classes can be as small as two to three people or a maximum of four people. However, if a group needs to be larger, the school will train a maximum of five people at a time. As of June 2010, prices range from $495 for the basic sailing lesson to $2,695 for the Ocean Passagemaking Experience course.

    School of Ocean Sailing

    • With more than 25 years of sail training experience, Captains Larry Wheeler and Letty Wheeler teach sailing courses at School of Ocean Sailing. The school is certified by the American Sail Training Association. The School of Ocean Sailing accomodates all levels of sailing enthusiasts. Students get to sail in the waters surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Courses include Ocean Sailing and Advanced Navigation, Celestial Navigation and Combined Ocean Sailing, Advanced Navigation with Night Passage. As of June 2010, prices range from $1,875 to $2,025. Discounts are available if fee is paid by check.
