With numerous high quality schools throughout the country, prospective chefs are finding themselves trying to determine which famous school would best fit their needs. California offers options for studying culinary arts, and is home to some of the more famous schools.

Culinary Institute of America

One of the most recognized names in culinary studies, the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), takes pride in the belief that it produces some of the best quality chefs in the world. Only the "best of the best" from the applicant pool are admitted into the CIA's program. Prospective students must possess a degree in a field relating to food studies, preferably in food science, nutrition, hospitality management or a similar program. Currently the CIA offers an Accelerated Culinary Arts Certificate program, a 30-week course designed to give graduates a head start on their career. The CIA also offers three ProChef certification levels, awarding certificates in the fields of Certified Chef de Cuisine, Certified Executive Chef and Certified Culinarian. As of 2010, estimated tuition costs for the ProChef certifications are $300 per course. The Accelerated Culinary Arts program averages $11,000.

As a division of the renowned Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, the California School of Culinary Arts gives students the chance to learn the field of culinary arts in one of the most fast-paced cities in the world: Los Angeles. A restaurant is located on campus, providing students with a real world experience of what the day-to-day life of a restaurant chef will entail. Four study options are available, including Pâtisserie and Baking Program, Hospitality and Restaurant Management Program, Culinary Arts Program and Bachelor of Arts in Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Management. Individual cooking courses are also available. Tuition averages approximately $45,000 as of 2010 and financial aid is available. The school also has campuses in Sacramento and San Francisco.

The Art Institute

The Culinary School currently offers students the option to earn either a diploma or an Associate of Applied Science in the culinary field.
