Completing necessary coursework to graduate high school in Kansas is the same as it is most anywhere, but the student with an eye on college will want to add to these basic requirements. As a high school education serves not only to get most any job, but to increase earning potential, it's wise to plan for college. The Kansas Department of Education has listed the minimum requirements each student must complete and pass to graduate high school. A minimum of 21 credits must be completed in seven fields.
English
Students must complete four credits of English while completing requirements for graduation. These requirements can be met with writing, reading, grammar, communications or literature classes. One credit may be waived if it is determined that the student will benefit more by taking another subject. This waiver requires administrative approval.
Mathematics
Three credits of mathematics must be passed and requires algebra and geometric concepts and other math coursework.
Science
Students can fulfill science credit requirements by taking three classes in either Earth or space science concepts, biological or physical sciences. One unit must be completed in a laboratory class.
History
Three completed history courses with requirements in U.S. and world history, U.S. government--including the U.S. Constitution, concepts of economics and geography and Kansas government and history must be passed to graduate.
Fine Arts
One credit of fine arts is required before graduation from a Kansas high school and that can be taken in forensics, theater, dance, art or music.
Physical Education
Students are only required to complete one credit of physical education that must include health education. This course may include safety, first aid or physiology. This course requirement can be waived with a note from the doctor indicating that the student is physically or mentally incapable of completing this coursework or it goes against a student's religious beliefs, which must be accompanied by a statement from the student's lawful custodian to that effect.
Electives
Students who take advantage of electives to complete prerequisite or advanced placement classes for college will be a step ahead. Students are required to have six credits in approved electives to graduate. Electives include classes in foreign languages, cooking, computer labs, wood- or auto-shop classes, business classes or additional art and music classes, to name a few.
