Preschool ministry crafts to help kids learn about the Bible.

Ministry crafts are an ideal way to help preschool children visualize the ideas in the Bible. With just a few supplies and imagination, preschool children can create Jacob's Ladder, Joseph's Coat of Many Colors, and their own Crown of Life. Complete ministry crafts for preschool children in about one-half hour before or after a Sunday school lesson.

    1. Coat of Many Colors

      • A quick and easy way for preschool children to re-create Joseph's Coat of Many Colors is to use ribbons, strips of fabric from old clothes or left over scraps from a quilt project. Draw the shape of a long coat with wide sleeves on a piece of white paper. On the bottom of the page, type or print the Bible verse, Genesis 37:3 (KJV) "Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors." Make enough copies for all the preschool children and then let them select the colors they want to use for their coat. Give each child an index card and have them glue strips and shapes of fabric on the index card in any pattern they want. Next, cut out the coat shape on the paper with the Bible verse. Tape or glue the index card with the colorful fabric scraps on the back of the paper so that the colorful cloth shows through the cutout on the front.

      Crown of Life

      • After reading and discussing the Bible verse, James 1:12 (KJV): "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him." Preschool children can make their own crowns. Collect or buy colorful plastic beads, plastic gems of all colors, shiny buttons, earrings or any old costume jewelry that can be disassembled and glued on the crowns. Cut a length of scalloped-edged bulletin board border to fit around each child's head. The metallic gold or silver borders work especially well. Children then select and glue their gems on the crowns. After the glue is dry, help children assemble their crowns by stapling the ends of the crown together.

      Jacob's Ladder

      • After reading them the story about Jacob's ladder, preschool children can construct their own ladder using poster board, yarn and angels. Read the Bible verses in Genesis 28:11--19 (KJV): "And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!" Cut long strips of poster board four inches wide and eight inches long. Punch holes down each side of the strip of poster board. Make sure the holes are parallel to each other so that the yarn rungs of the ladder will be straight. Draw and print angels for the children to color and then cut out. Next, help the children thread the yarn through the holes in the ladder to make the rungs. Begin by tying a knot at one end of the yarn and tape the yarn to the back of the ladder strip. Thread the yarn through a hole at one end of the ladder strip, stretch straight across and thread through the hole on the other side of the ladder strip. From the back of the ladder, thread the yarn through the hole directly above the first hole. On the front, stretch it across to the hole on the other side and thread the yarn through to the back. Continue this process until the ladder is constructed. Tie a knot in the end and tape the yarn securely to the back at the top of the ladder. Children then color and cut out their angels and place them on the ladder by putting them behind the yarn rungs. Secure the angels by a drop glue on the back.
