Nationwide, approximately 38 percent of adults use some form of complementary or alternative medicine, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Non-traditional healing methods regulated by federal and state governments include acupuncture, Oriental medicine, massage therapy and herbology. Residents of New York who want to study these methods of alternative medicine can enroll in schools in urban and rural locations.
Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

The Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Seneca Falls is a part of New York Chiropractic College (NYCC). The school offers a master's degree in acupuncture, a master's degree in acupuncture and Oriental medicine and coursework in biomedicine. Finger Lakes is a member of the Society for Acupuncture Research and its research activities are conducted in collaboration with NYCC.
The school maintains an herb garden ,giving students hands-on experience in herbal medicine education. Finger Lakes is also the home of the largest herb dispensary in upstate New York, with more than 300 raw herbs from China. The dispensary fills orders for other sites, including the Seneca Falls Health Center. Third-year students have the opportunity to study traditional Chinese medicine in clinics and hospitals in China. Federal and state financial aid is available for Finger Lakes degree programs.

Swedish Institute

The Swedish Institute in New York City is one of the oldest alternative health care institutions in the nation. The massage therapy program, founded in 1916, is the oldest in the country. Students in the program earn an associate in occupational studies diploma. Classes are offered for full- and part-time students.
The school's acupuncture program awards a dual bachelor of professional studies/master of science degree. Graduates qualify to sit for the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine exam. Students who pass the exam automatically qualify for a New York State acupuncture license. Practicing acupuncturists and massage therapists can also take classes at the Swedish Institute to fulfill state-mandated continuing education requirements. Federal and state financial aid is available for degree programs.

New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine

The New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NYCTCM) in Mineola offers two degree programs: a three-year bachelor of professional studies/master of science program and a four year program that includes Oriental medicine coursework. The programs prepare students for the state licensing examinations.
Students who want to gain herbal expertise can earn a certificate in Chinese herbology, a program authorized by the New York State Board of Regents. NYCTCM also has a satellite campus in Manhattan. Federal and state financial aid is available for NYCTCM degree programs.
