Peru is home to a medicinal plant called maca.

Maca root is a Peruvian plant that is similar in color and size to a turnip. Maca is considered a food source in Peru and has been used by Peruvians for centuries for overall health improvements. There are several side effects, both positive and negative, that come with the consumption of maca.

    1. Iron Overload

      • Although maca contains iron, consuming approximately 2 to 6 capsules of 500 milligrams of maca should not pose a problem. But those with too much iron in their systems or people who have iron sensitivity issues could face health problems. Therefore it is important to consult a doctor before consuming maca if you have issues with iron.

      Estrogen Elevation

      • Maca's ability to increase libido and fertility is linked to its effect of increasing estrogen. Recent studies show that abnormal increases in estrogen levels have been linked to cancer. Moreover, the increase in estrogen levels hampers the function of birth-control drugs and increases menstruation.

      Fatigue

      • One of the most common side affects of ingesting maca root is fatigue. This is especially true of those who consume the supplement on a regular basis and those who overuse it. Those with dehydration and high potassium levels who consume maca also have increased levels of fatigue. Therefore consume the supplement in moderation and if you have high potassium or are suffering from dehydration, be aware that fatigue may be a side effect.

      Increased Endurance

      • Maca increases testosterone in men. Increased levels of testosterone promotes longer sexual performance and increased libido. In additional to increased sexual endurance, testosterone levels are also responsible for increasing physical abilities. The increased endurance and energy levels are also observed by women as well.

      Hot Flashes

      • Some women, both pre- and post-menopausal, report having hot flashes as a side effect of maca consumption. There is not any direct evidence of what causes hot flashes with maca consumption since each person is different and other factors may influence this particular side effect.
