Interior design refers to the theory and profession of creating the structure and aesthetics of interior environments. It involves integrating established methodology (research, analysis and technical principles) with client needs and the creative process. Like architecture, most interior designers obtain some sort of degree in the field, whether it is an associate's, bachelor’s or master’s degree.

  1. New York School of Interior Design

    • In existence since 1916, the New York School of Interior Design is the only academic institution in the state of New York dedicated entirely to the field of interior design. The Renaissance-Revival campus is located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Classes are small, ranging from ten to fifteen students. In 2009, the New York School of Interior Design had a total enrollment of 750 students, 57 of which were graduate students.

    The University of Cincinnati, Ohio

    • Known as DAAP, the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio offers the benefits of being part of a larger university.     • The Pratt Institute, founded by Charles Pratt, began in 1887 with twelve students and was founded on the motto “Be True To Your Work, And Your Work Will Be True To You.” The school offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Interior Design.

    • Founded in 1877 in Providence, Rhode Island, the Rhode Island School of Design has approximately 2,200 students, 350 faculty members and curators and 400 staff members.     • Kansas State University’s College of Architecture and Design was established in 1963. The college hosts the landscape architecture, architecture, architectural engineering, construction science, interior architecture and regional community planning departments. The Department of Interior Architecture and Product design is home to the interior design program, which is a five-year professional degree program leading to a master’s degree.

    Savannah College of Art and Design

    • The Savannah College of Art and Design’s interior design program is offered through the School of Building Arts. Interior design projects include commercial, residential and institutional design. Students work with AutoCAD, Microstation, the Adobe Master Collection, 3D Studio, VIZ, SURFCAM, and Autodesk Maya and Revit. SCAD offers a bachelor’s in fine art (B.F.A.), master’s in fine art (M.F.A.) and a master’s in art (M.A.). The B.F.A. program provides students with a solid drawing, design and technological foundation; the M.F.A. program focuses on design inquiry and investigation; the M.A. program is built around design theory and the profession of interior design.

    • The University of Florida’s Department of Interior Design offers a four-year bachelor of interior design (B.I.D.) program that prepares students for careers in office, retail, health-care, residential and hospitality design. Students are able to choose a specialization such as historic preservation and environmental design.
