High School Activities for Christmas

Thoughtful Christmas activities give students the opportunity to do more to celebrate the holiday than just receive presents. High school holiday activities can be incorporated into history, language arts, and other subjects. Students can learn about other cultures, explore historical aspects of Christmas, or become more attuned to other ways to celebrate the holiday.

Serving Others

  • Christmas is the perfect opportunity for students to get involved in a community service project. Although many people look forward to receiving gifts at Christmas, it is also a time for giving, and helping out those in need is particularly rewarding. Activities can include a toy drive for underprivileged children or a food drive to benefit people in need. The collection will be more meaningful if students help to wrap the gifts or package the food. If possible, arrange a field trip so the students can drop off the items and see the people receiving them.

Writing to Military Pen Pals

  • Arrange for students to correspond with men and women in the military who are unable to enjoy Christmas at home. Students can even send care packages to their pen pals as the holiday gets closer. This is an excellent English class activity.

Researching Toys

  • Assign each student a toy to research. For older toys that are still available today, students can make time lines indicating when the toys were first made and how they have changed. If the toy is available, students can display the toy and demonstrate how it was used. Some museums sell replicas of toys used during colonial times.

Exploring Other Cultures

  • Students can learn about Christmas by exploring how it is celebrated by others. Some children in the class may have different traditions they want to share. In addition, assign students different nationalities to research and they can discover how those people celebrate Christmas. Students can share what they learn with the class.
