School counselors are licensed counselors who work in elementary, middle and high schools. Those who work with students in kindergarten to eighth grade focus on assisting students with academic and behavioral issues. They pay close attention to students with emotional issues, such as abuse at home or learning disabilities. Counselors working in high schools also assist students with social issues, career development and college preparation. These professionals are typically required to have a master's degree in school counseling. Each state also has its own qualification requirements for certification. There is a variety of school counseling programs throughout the United States.

The University of Maryland in College Park (UM) was recently ranked as the number one graduate school in student counseling by "U.S. News & World Report." UM was also ranked 37th in The Institute of Higher Education's list of the World's Top 100 Universities. The school's Department of Counseling and Personal Support Services offers a master's degree program in school counseling. The program concentrates on diverse populations in urban school settings. The 100-hour practicum and 600-hour internship incorporates both individual and group counseling.

The University of Iowa's College of Education was recently ranked by "U.S. News and World Report" as the 22nd best public graduate school in America, with renowned programs in educational psychology and student counseling. The school counseling program offers a master's of arts degree to eligible students. It maintains a special focus on multicultural training, and requires a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship.

Northern Arizona University

Northern Arizona University (NAU) was recently ranked by "Forbes Magazine" among the top 100 public colleges, in addition to one of the nation's best collegiate values. NAU's College of Education offers a master's of arts program in school counseling and a master's of education program with an emphasis in school counseling. The master's of education program requires completion of 48 credit hours, and prepares students to become certified K-12 school counselors. The master's of arts program requires completion of 72 credit hours over the course of three years, and consists of the 48 hours needed for the master's of education degree, and 1,200 internship hours. It awards a master's degree and a certificate in school psychology to eligible students.
