How to Update Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player is a free digital media player developed by Microsoft. The newer versions are only available for Windows operating systems. Windows Media Player allows you to watch DVD movies, listen to music and upload files to portable media players such as MP3 players. Updating your Windows Media Player application ensures that the program is constantly capable of running and playing new and arising video and audio formats.

Step 1

Go to the Windows Media download page (see Resources). Select "Windows Media Player" in the Select Download box.

Select the latest version of Windows Media Player for your operating system in the Select Version box. For example, select Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP if you are currently using Windows Media Player 10. Keep in mind that some versions of Windows Media Player are not available for all operating systems.

Select the language you want to use. A new page launches. Click the "Download Now" button. When prompted, click "Save" and download the Windows Media Player updating file to your desktop. Double-click the Windows Media Player updating file and click "Run" to launch the installation wizard. Follow the guided prompts on the installation wizard to complete the update. If prompted, restart your computer.
