If you are interested in a career in customer service but you are not sure what type of position you want, you should be happy to know there are many to choose from. If you pick one field and then decide to move to a different type of customer service, the skills you learned from your previous position will aid you in your new job.
General Customer Care
General customer care specialists are the liaison between the customer and the company. In general, they are responsible for discussing billing issues, basic troubleshooting issues and handling any escalated customer complaints. This is typically an entry-level position.
Technical support representatives work to resolve issues that prevent a customer from effectively utilizing their company's services. Often a company has several different levels of technical service that requires training in specific skills. Due to this, technical support is rarely an entry-level position and often requires a higher level of secondary schooling.
Activation representatives set up and activate new accounts. This can range from setting up retail accounts to setting up utility accounts. These reps often have little interaction with external customers; their customers are internal sales representatives.
Sales Product Support
Product support representatives help customers with pre-purchase and post-purchase questions. They must be highly educated on the products the company sells. These representatives usually receive on-the-job training. In some cases, these jobs can be entry-level.
Business-corporate representatives work with large accounts that may require specialized attention. Often, these representatives are assigned corporate accounts as opposed to waiting for a call. Specialized training on how to handle these accounts is typically required, and in most cases, these positioned are reserved for representatives who have proven to be an asset to the company.
