Union Officers Duties

Every union in the United States that represents members of their organization have union officers elected at designated times. The union officers are elected in a democratic format where the members of the organization cast ballots of each union member running for different offices. The election of a union officer requires them to perform the duties and holds them responsible for upholding the union's constitution and rules.

Representation

  • Each elected union officer represents a group of members of the organization. As the representative of these members, the officer will report any concerns or problems to a company's management. This communication can involve handling union disputes or communicating union rules to the management of a company or the organizational leaders. The union officer will sit in meetings with the organizations leaders or company management and communicate the meeting agenda to the union members they were elected to represent. They also hold regularly scheduled meetings with the members that elected the officer.

Appointment Duties

  • A duty and responsibility of a union officer is to appoint other union members to groups or committees. These groups or committees will handle safety, constitutional rules and other areas designated by the unions constitution including contract negotiations with company management. This duty includes appointing assistant officers, delegates and any business managers such as secretary or treasurer.

Supervision

  • The union officer will ensure that all committees are performing the task assigned to them. For example, a safety committee will be required to meet on a regularly scheduled basis to review safety procedures and concerns. The union officer will be required to oversee this meeting and report those concerns or safety problems to company management as well as other union officials.

Financial Duties

  • It is the responsibility of the union officer to make sure every member of the organization under their representation is paying dues. The union officer will collect and deposit those dues in a bank or union treasury as directed by the constitution and rules of the organization. He will review all bills and ensure the bills of the union are paid on a timely manner, such as the rent and utilities of the union hall. Another financial duty of the union officer is to make sure any disbursement of funds from the organization are properly done, such as strike funds and disbursements.
