Make your own works of art for truly personalized wall decor.

Creating your own wall art is an affordable way to elevate the look of your room and create a focal center. The benefit of self-made wall decor is that you are able to decide on the exact look you want to fit your personality and the room's theme, and have fun in the process.

    1. Photo Collage

      • Whether you want to display family portraits or your own photography, a wall collage lets you see them all together. Optimal places for hanging include above the sofa, on the stairwell, or on any blank wall that just needs some focus. Choose photos to group that have a cohesive theme, and are in similar tones---such as all in color, all in black and white or all in sepia---and are in the same types of frames and matting. You can either hang them in even numbers in a symmetrical way, like four frames hung together in a square, or asymmetrically with different sizes and orientations of frames that fit together like a puzzle, leaving an inch or two of space between each.

      Paint Your Own Canvas

      • Maybe you're a budding artist, or just want to recreate something you saw on the cheap. Either way, self-made art is a very personalized form of decor. You can purchase a stretched canvas mat at your local art store, where you can also get painting supplies if you don't already own some. Do a trial run on a piece of posterboard until you are satisfied with the results. Canvas art looks best if you cover the entire piece with paint, but it doesn't necessarily require art classes. Try geometric shapes, or go Jackson Pollock style with plenty of splatters and strokes. You can do one large piece, or several pieces of the same size that you can hang in a row. Get your other family members in on the action so that everyone can be proud to show off the wall.

      Place Mat Mural

      • You can find surprisingly beautiful place mats for less than $1 each, according to the Better Homes and Gardens website, and, hung together, they can form an entire wall of art. Use a hole punch to put holes in the top and bottom of each mat, then place double-sided hooks in each hole. Then link together four to six place mats vertically, with the top hook hanging to a picture nail in the wall. You can then repeat the process, with sets of linked mats hanging next to each other until you've covered the desired amount of wall space.
