Housing schools such as Columbia University, New York University, City University of New York and The New School, New York City is one of the world's largest college towns. As a result, there's more to studying in New York than frequenting the corner Starbucks or camping out at the 24-hour Apple Store. Indeed, there are some unique local options for studying, too.

Washington Square Park

  • Washington Square Park is the ideal study destination for students based in lower Manhattan. There's no better place in the city to relax with a book and take in a little sunshine while improving your academic standing. Located in the heart of the main New York University campus, it's a hot spot for NYU students. If you need peace and quiet while studying, however, the non-stop onslaught of tourists and street performers may not be for you.

Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

  • For total silence and free wireless internet access, you can't do any better than the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, better known as the main branch of the New York Public Library. When the building was constructed, it was the largest marble structure ever attempted in the United States. The library has a multitude of nooks for solitary studying as well as the gigantic main reading room. The only downside is the hours. The Schwarzman building is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. It is closed on Sundays.

Doma Cafe

  • When studying, you need the proper fuel to maintain productivity. For that, there's nothing better than a hit of caffeine. At Doma Cafe, you can use free wireless internet while studying at one of the many small wooden tables dotting the cafe. During a study break, you can browse the art lining the cafe's walls or take a look at a selection from its well-stocked library. If studying for the long haul, Doma is an ideal option, as its doors are open from 7:45 a.m. until midnight.
