Working from home is an ideal career choice for many people. The Internet has made working from home, or telecommuting, easier than in days before the World Wide Web was available to so many people. A person can do many types of work from home, such as traditional careers, freelance jobs, contract employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Traditional Employment

  • There are several traditional careers that allow employees to work from home. Companies can have trouble finding the right skill sets in the metropolitan area where they are located. This has caused many companies to look for employees outside of the area for quality workers. The employees that these companies seek have skills from previous employment and the ability to work from home. This usually means having an Internet connection, dedicated phone line for work, and a quiet space to work such as a spare bedroom or home office. Unless a company needs an employee to work as part of a team or group on a daily basis, many people can work remotely from home. Traditional employment may include marketing, sales, accounting, human resources and administration. Companies advertise telecommuting jobs on online job boards or through an employment agency. These jobs normally pay an annual salary and offer benefits such as medical, dental and vision insurance.

Freelance Opportunities

  • There are many freelance jobs that be done from home. Freelance writing, for example, can be done from the home. There are online content sites that allow a freelancer to write articles at her own pace. Content sites normally pay a flat fee for an article or they may pay royalties for page views or ad clicks. Writers can also freelance for magazines and newspapers. Freelance writing jobs can be found through online job boards.

Law firms often hire freelancers when they are working on large cases. Legal freelance jobs are normally for experienced researchers or paralegals. Law firms normally advertise freelance positions through employment agencies or online job boards.

Contract Employment

  • Contract employment is normally a short or long term contract with a company. Contractors may sign a contract for three months or three years to provide particular services to a company. Contract employment is common in human resources departments, web design, engineering and marketing. Companies who hire contractors normally do not have the budget to offer benefits or may lack office space. Contract jobs normally pay by the hour and offer overtime. Companies advertise for contract positions on their own websites as well as online job boards and employment agencies.

Entrepreneur

  • The Internet has allowed for new businesses to open easily and quickly. An entrepreneur can open a home based business by using the Internet. The Internet allows entrepreneurs to register a domain name, which is a website address, and build a website by using an online template provided by the hosting company which sold the domain name. The template allows anyone who knows how to use basic software the ability to create a website from home in a short amount of time. The website can advertise services that an entrepreneur would like to offer. Services can include babysitting, alterations, dog walking, landscaping, marketing, recruiting, accounting; any service that does not require a team of people to physically be in the same room can work for a home business.
