Designers can work in a variety of industries, such as fashion, publishing or construction. Although different types of designers use different mediums, each must consider the needs of their clients or customers to create a product which is both attractive and functional.
Interior designers plan out ways to improve the aesthetics, function and safety of a space. They work in homes, offices, stores, restaurants and virtually any other interior space. Interior designers often work with engineers, electricians and architects to ensure safety and practicality while coming up with a design to meet the client's needs.
Fashion designers create clothing, shoes and accessories. They must study trends in order to create products that will appeal to their target consumer market. Many fashion designers create products intended for mass marketing. Other high-fashion designers design pieces either for smaller high-end boutiques or custom pieces for private clients at much higher prices. Some fashion designers work within the entertainment industry, creating clothing and costumes for use in movies, theater and other productions.
Graphic designers create visual media for use in a variety of areas. Some design web sites and create interactive multimedia. Others create promotional material for companies such as signs, advertisements, packaging and marketing material. Many graphic designers work for print publications, creating the overall layout of magazines and newspapers. Some graphic designers also create special effects for movies and television.
Landscape designers create the layouts of outdoor areas such as parks, museums, residential areas, gardens, golf courses and campuses. They examine the work site and plan out the arrangement of walkways, trees and plants, buildings and roads to come up with a layout that is practical, attractive and safe.
