The Duties of a Camp Leader

Summer camps provide children with a summer full of fun. Camp leaders are essential to running a successful summer camp. The camp leader's main concerns include entertaining and ensuring the safety of the children. Camp leaders have many duties that they must perform every day to fulfill these goals.

  • The camp leader must ensure the entertainment of his children. He starts by making a daily program for each age group. He must account for the ages of his kids before making a program. Programs should be age appropriate for each group. After making his plan, he decides what equipment is necessary for the day's activities. He and his staff will get out the equipment and put it in place for the campers. After making the program, he gives it to individual group leaders to fulfill. The camp leader should also participate in daily games and activities. Events and games include kickball, swimming, baseball, crafts, hikes, roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories. Including all of his campers in these activities provides a fun summer camp experience for everybody.

  • A camp leader must keep his campers safe. Ensuring his campers' safety requires many different duties. He keeps an eye on campers during all physical events. Campers will be competitive at their sporting events, which can lead to angry or violent behavior. Discouraging angry or physically violent behavior should be a major concern at all times. Punishing those who perform these actions can help discourage these activities and keep his campers safe. Swimming is also a major part of any summer camp experience. It can also be dangerous. Knowing CPR and having strong swimming skills can help avoid drowning incidents. He should also know basic first aid so that he can mend minor injuries. Summer camp is a very physical place and minor injuries will likely occur daily. Day-to-day injuries will include scrapes, cuts and bumps on the head. Keeping an accurate and regularly updated roster of his campers can help alert him to any missing kids who may have wandered away between activities.

Administrative Duties

  • The camp leader performs many administrative duties. This includes attending weekly meetings. He must execute any decision made at these meetings. Making sure his employees execute these decisions is also vital. Understanding and observing all camp policies avoids creating a problem situation. Again, he must make sure his employees follow these same policies. Creating a role model for his employees may help them follow his lead. Scheduling his staffs' activities is another day-to-day concern as is supervising their activities. Properly training his employees at the beginning of the season will make sure that they understand their job properly. Rewarding and punishing employees and campers who break the rules helps keep his camp's activities running smoothly and safely. He must also inventory, prepare and purchase camp supplies on a daily basis.
