Daycare assistants are usually employed by facilities that offer childcare services. Most facilities require that a potential assistant meet certain requirements. This job field may present many opportunities since many working parents are relying upon these types of services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that child care workers held an average of 1.3 million jobs in 2008. In addition, the median hourly wage of workers in this field was $9.12.
Most employers require that daycare assistants have at least a high school diploma or GED. Daycare assistants are also required to be child and infant CPR certified. This certification is obtained through the American Red Cross. CPR classes are offered to anyone interested in becoming certified. Individuals may visit the ARC's website and search for training classes by entering their zip code or state. A class may be reserved online. Many employers may also require that their workers take childcare training classes and receive certifications in childcare. Some larger facilities may require assistants to take college courses in child development.
Fingerprints must be submitted to the secretary of state office in the state where the daycare assistant desires to become employed. Many states offer Live Scan facilities where individuals may have their fingerprints scanned and forwarded to the appropriate agency. There may be a fee for this service that varies according to the state of residence. The fingerprints are then forwarded by the state to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The assistant must not have any criminal convictions because this could prevent employment with a childcare facility.
The daycare assistant must possess the ability to interact with children. She should be creative because she may organize activities and educational games for children. She should also be patient and should be able to instruct those children who she is assisting with after school assignments. When conflicts arise among children, the assistant should be able to resolve them. Assistants should also have the ability to supervise several children at one time and she may be required to manage them without any assistance. They should also be alert when supervising active children to ensure their safety.
Daycare facilities require that daycare assistants submit proof of immunizations. To be considered for employment, the immunizations must be current and meet the standards for immunizations in the state where the assistant is employed.
Most employers require that the assistant have previous experience working in a child-care setting. Those who meet certain education requirements, such as college courses or certification, may be considered if they are lacking experience.
