There are various employment opportunities for teens.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, millions of teens work part time annually, and these work experiences are beneficial for teens. Teens obtain new opportunities, and they also learn job skills. There are various employment opportunities for teens nationwide that give teens both work experience and extra cash.

  1. Camp Counselor

    • During the summer months, many recreation centers, community-based organizations and youth camps are in need of teen counselors. Camp counselors typically oversee a group of youth, and counselors may be responsible for leading children in a wide array of activities, such as crafts, swimming, hiking or performing arts, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The work environment varies depending on the camp. For example, some camps are located in city recreation centers, and others may be located in a wilderness setting, in which counselors stay overnight. Compensation depends on the place of employment, but some teens may receive a minimum-wage payment.

    Tutoring Children

    • There are many children that are in need of academic assistance, and teens can work as tutors to help these children. Teens that are interested in tutoring should have a high grade in a specific subject area, such as math, English or a foreign language, in which they are interested in tutoring. Teen tutors may often have the opportunity to create their own work schedule, and compensation varies depending on the child's parent's discretion.

    Restaurant Server

    • Many restaurants rely on young, outgoing and energetic teens to work as waitresses or waiters. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 21 percent of restaurant workers in 2008 were teens from the ages of 16 to 19. Restaurant servers are responsible for taking customer's food orders, ensuring all customers' dining needs are met and in many cases, accepting payments. Servers work in a fast-paced work environment, and the compensation varies depending on the establishment.
