Army Signal Platoon Leader Duties

The Army Signal Corps is responsible for the communication relays of the entire United States Army. Signal platoon leaders, or signal officers, work to plan and integrate communication systems into every unit of the Army. They also build the infrastructure that allows instant communication between command posts and soldiers fighting on the ground.

Plan Communication During Missions

  • It is the responsibility of a signal officer to plan all aspects of communication routes during peacetime and wartime missions. This includes plan execution and determining which soldiers will be responsible for equipment, maintaining signal integrity, and relaying mission status from the field into central command. The signal officer is responsible for relaying the mission status information that comes in from his units to the higher echelons of the command structure. Up to 35 troops can be under any one signal officer.

Leadership Duties

  • A signal officer holds the rank of lieutenant. As such, it her duty to have a tactical understanding of how her platoon functions and in what manner her men are best utilized. She must also have a working knowledge of how her leadership position fits into joint-structured operations when working with other platoons in peace or wartime missions. On such occasions, a signal officer may be called upon to lead other soldiers outside of her signal platoon.

Coordinate Signal Operators

  • A signal officer coordinates the employment of signal soldiers in his platoon and throughout the battalion at large. The signal officer assigns the signal soldier to units conducting field operations in multi-national operations and solo United States military efforts. This strategy creates an information network that becomes the eyes and ears of the Army and other branches of the Armed Services on the ground. A signal officer must have an intimate knowledge of communication systems in order to effectively allocate resources.
