Within a college or university, you can choose form a variety of college careers, ranging from teaching to managing multiple departments. Just like a town, they offer various departments that oversee special programs. There are even departments within departments. For example, the student life department includes residential living, campus activities and athletics.
Dean of Students
A dean of students works under the president of a college or university. His or her job is to build and maintain a community for the students that promotes learning through education, socialization and physical activities. They do this by managing and supervising various departments that provide services to the students. A dean of students also reviews and creates campus policies. To become a dean of students, you must have a master's degree, but many schools prefer a doctorate and at least 10 years of experience in student affairs.
Director of Athletics
The director of athletics oversees the day-to-day functions of a college athletic department. They are responsible for managing the various departments within the athletic department, including student recreation and fitness, varsity sports, building maintenance concerns, sales and marketing. The director of athletics supervisors the athletics staff, including coaches. They report to the dean of students. This college career is focused on student programming limited to sports and physical recreation. It is a niche career in student affairs that can be one's ultimate career choice or be a step up the ladder toward becoming a dean of students or president of a college.
Drexel University describes the college career of a resident director to be a full-time, live-in employee whose role is to foster a positive social and academic living environment in the residence halls. They do this by maintaining a quiet, learning-friendly atmosphere, as well as implementing community building programs. Resident directors oversee the living conditions in the residence halls by addressing maintenance concerns, student conflicts and security. They also supervise the student resident assistants and desk staff. They report to the assistant director or director of housing.
A professor is perhaps the most recognizable college employee. Very simply, a professor is a more sophisticated term for a teacher. They earn the title professor by gaining a more advanced college degree focused in a specific area of study. Their most basic job is to teach students specific class material, assess projects and reports, and provide a final grade. Professors often oversee research and act as advisers on committees and projects. They typically report to a program coordinator or director of programs within their specialty.
