Western Curtain Ideas

Horseshoe tiebacks help add a western theme to any curtains.

Western curtains add a touch of the old west to your home with farm, pioneer, cowboy and wildlife themes. The designs use materials that appear rustic, natural and/or handmade to help recreate the hearty nature of the wild frontier. For the best results, look for materials that appear traditional, but are actually cheaper and more durable versions of traditional materials, such as ultrasuede instead of suede.

  1. Amusing Cow Curtains

    • Combine a simple silhouette with a black-and-white cowhide pattern to create western-themed curtains with a humorous touch. Each tab-top curtain consists of cowhide-patterned ultrasuede. Each thick tab-top secures in the front with a small, cow-shaped, wrought iron clasp for a subtle accent. The curtains pair well with a rustic wrought iron or wood curtain rod.

    Classic Checkered Curtains

    • Take inspiration from an old style to create bishop sleeve curtains from red-and-white checked gingham. Gingham is a traditional, sturdy yarn-woven fabric. Bishop sleeve curtains are rectangular curtains that are pulled back in the middle so that the upper halves of the curtain create puffy shapes.

Each western curtain consists of a rectangular fabric panel slightly longer than the window and about two-thirds the width. A ruffled loop for the rod tops each curtain and a small ruffle trims the bottom. The two curtains hang on a white curtain rod pulled back bishop sleeve style with a ruffled ribbon attached to the wall.

    Denim Bandanna Curtains

    • Mix blue denim and blue bandanna-patterned cotton for a western curtain with a rough handmade style. The pocket-top curtain consists of a blue bandanna square trimmed on the bottom and sides with a thin roll of blue denim. The large curtain hangs from an iron branding rod secured curtain rod style. The twisted end of a second branding rod secured to the wall creates a hook that pulls the entire curtain back.

    Patchwork Scrap Curtains

    • Sew together pieces of assorted scrap fabric to create patchwork curtains. Each pocket curtain consists of a colorful patchwork square with a long patchwork ruffle covering the curtain rod pocket. Thin white ruffles trim the sides and bottom of the curtains, as well as the bottom of the patchwork ruffles. Thick, white cotton ribbon tiebacks provide a bold contrast around the middle of each curtain.

    Recycled Burlap Curtains

    • Create two western curtains on a budget with a shabby chic design consisting of burlap and thin rope. A rectangular piece cut from a burlap sack provides the base for each curtain. Thin pieces of rope create tab-top loops on the top of the burlap. The rope also trims all four edges of each curtain for a subtle embellishment. The curtains hang from a bark-covered branch instead of a curtain rod. Mini horseshoes on each wall provide a place to tuck each curtain back.
