Vet techs assist a veterinarian with caring for animals.

Vet techs, or veterinary technicians, assist a veterinarian with many different duties around a clinic. A vet tech is the equivalent of a nurse. He does testing, patient care, equipment management and clean-up. Vet techs go through either a two-year or a four-year training program. There are a number of schools in Missouri that offer accredited training to become a vet tech. Missouri requires veterinary technicians to pass a Veterinary Technician National Exam and the Missouri State Exam.

  1. Metropolitan Community College

    • The Metropolitan Community College awards an Associate in Applied Science in veterinary technology with the completion of a two-year program. The program consists of classes four days a week to allow for animal-related employment while taking classes. Students work with 12 animal species are worked with hands on, and all of the instructors have real world experience. This vet tech program has been accredited since 1975 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AWMA).

    Crowder College

    • Crowder College offers an an Associate in Applied Science for veterinary technology. This is a 79-credit course that takes two years to complete. Crowder College has a unique atmosphere for its vet tech and pre-vet programs. There are multiple barns and corrals, 300 acres of farm land, a dog kennel and a small animal kennel. There are many different types of animals right on campus, from small pets to large farm animals. The Agriculture Science Center offers much of the equipment used in the vet tech career. The vet tech program is limited to 16 students per year.

    Jefferson College

    • Jefferson College offers an Associates of Applied Technology in veterinary technology, a two-year degree program accredited by the AVMA. The focus of this program is twofold: it teaches the theory of science and animal health, and provides the hands-on training needed to become a veterinary technician. This is a limited program with only 36 students accepted for each school year.
