Top OSHA Violations

Each year the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) tabulates data from its own data on employers who were issued citations to determine the highest risk areas for American workers. OSHA issues its Top 10 most cited violations and lists the area of the 29 Code of Federal Regulation that was violated. The 29 CFR are the regulations that OSHA enforces and is broken down into subparts such as Construction and General Industry.

  1. Number One

      The number one violation is in the area of scaffolding as found in the general requirements in the construction subpart. The offense is in direct violation of 29 CFR 1926.451, which covers staging, planking and fall protection of scaffolding.

    Number Two

      Construction Fall Protection

      The number two violation according to OSHA is fall protection in construction. This violation is covered under 29 CFR 1926.501 which covers fall protection for levels over 6 feet.

    Number Three

      Hazard Warning

      The number three violation was of the hazard communication standard for general industry that is covered under 29 CFR 1910.1200. This standard covers the communication of potentially hazardous materials from the employer to the employee, and involves proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets, labeling and training.

    Number Four

      Full Face Respirator

      The number four violation is in the area of respiratory protection in general industry. Respiratory protection is covered under 29 CFR 1910.134 and covers the proper use of a respiratory program to protect workers against potentially dangerous airborne substances.

    Number Five

    • Electrical Box
      Electrical Box

      Number five is failure to have proper control of hazardous energy (also known as the lockout/tagout program) in general industry. Covered under 29 CFR 1910.147, it is the employer's responsibility to implement a program that trains and protects workers from hazardous energy.

    Number Six

      Number six is the improper use of ladders in construction, which is covered in 29 CFR 1926.1053. This regulation gives specific requirements for the use of ladders for the protection of the user on a construction site.

    Number Seven

    • Common Forklift
      Common Forklift

      The seventh violation is in the area of powered industrial trucks in general industry. Also known as forklifts or lift trucks, this area of work is covered under 29 CFR 1910.178 and sets forth the requirements for the safe operation of this machinery

    Number Eight

    • Electrical Machine
      Electrical Machine

      Number eight deals specifically with electrical wiring methods, and components and equipment in general industry. That is, under 29 CFR 1910.305, OSHA lays out the requirements in all types of wiring and how it deals with machinery in the general industry setting.

    Number Nine

    • Industrial Wiring
      Industrial Wiring

      Number nine deals with electrical systems design and its general requirements in general industry. Where number eight deals with how wiring is used, number nine deals with the design and characteristics of the actual wiring and is covered under 29 CFR 1910.303.

    Number Ten

    • Number ten has to do with fall protection training requirements in the construction industry. 29 CFR 1926.503 requires employers to train their employees in the safe work practices of fall protection and prevention.
