Shutters add personality to a window.

Shutters dress up a window from the outside or the inside, bringing a special touch of the owner's personality to a home. Shutters can be charmingly old-fashioned, very modern or simply artistic. Decorating with shutters adds an interesting dimension to your living space. Does this Spark an idea?

Plantation shutters, with their large slats, create clean lines in any room. Fitted into the lower half of a bay window they add an element of grace to an otherwise hard-to-decorate area. Install a bank of floor-to-ceiling plantation shutters across a large expanse of plate glass for added elegance. In a simple arched window, plantation shutters are beautiful when mounted in the lower section along with a fan shutter in the dome. Simple curtains can be used effectively with plantation shutters, but these stand on their own very well.

    Standard Interior Shutters

Small, standard shutters consist of two panels that open like cabinet doors, one to each side. They work well when placed in side windows in a doorway, especially when there is an open-glass transom window above. For a bolder statement, choose hinged shutters that open as a bi-fold. Casual room décor easily supports this type of shutter. For a sweet touch in a little girl's room, paint shutters a pastel color that matches the walls or coordinates with bedspreads or furnishings. For little boys, paint shutters in a primary color and coordinate with accessories as well. Bi-folds of this sort work beautifully as part of the provincial or cottage look.

    Outside Shutters

Shutters that grace the outside of a home create a special curbside personality for that home. Exterior shutters set the tone for what is to be found inside. The standard exterior shutter is the louvered green, black or charcoal shutter, but with so many colors and styles available, it's not necessary to go with the ordinary. For something different, consider using shutters that are solid rather than slatted and have decorative and ornate routing for texture. Functional shutters, such as storm shutters, can be decorative as well. Bahama shutters that open outward from the top create a casual, tropical look to a home. A tall, narrow arched window is attractive with functional solid shutters that open, creating an interesting scalloped line at the top.
