The University of California at Berkeley department of sociology offers a graduate program leading toward the Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The department trains students in 22 fields, including culture, demography, ethnographic methods, family, gender, stratification and class, sexuality and urban studies. The graduate program admits about 10 percent of applicants each year, forming an average class size of 20. Six Berkeley sociology PhD students have won the American Sociological Association award for best sociology dissertation since the competition began 17 years ago. The sociology department at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program with eight possible fields of concentration, including culture and knowledge; economic sociology and organizations; gender and sexuality; health, aging and life course; power, history and social change; race, ethnicity and immigration; social demography; and social psychology. The program emphasizes methodology and provides students with a one-year practicum to introduce them to a variety of research methods, including survey, historical, cooperative, qualitative field and quantitative methods. Sociology PhD students can also work toward joint degrees in sociology and social work, public health or women's studies.
