The nation's top sociology graduate schools offer Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs to prepare students for careers in academic research, scholarship and teaching. Most of these programs cover a wide variety of specialized fields of study within sociology, including race, ethnicity and gender studies, sexuality studies, urban studies, ethnography, social stratification and demography.

  1. University of California at Berkeley

    • The University of California at Berkeley department of sociology offers a graduate program leading toward the Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The department trains students in 22 fields, including culture, demography, ethnographic methods, family, gender, stratification and class, sexuality and urban studies. The graduate program admits about 10 percent of applicants each year, forming an average class size of 20. Six Berkeley sociology PhD students have won the American Sociological Association award for best sociology dissertation since the competition began 17 years ago. In 2009, "U.S. News & World Report" magazine ranked the University of California at Berkeley first among sociology graduate schools.

    University of Wisconsin-Madison

    • The University of Wisconsin-Madison sociology department spans 29 research areas, including class analysis, urban sociology, economic sociology, general social theory, race and ethnic studies, social stratification and sociology of agriculture, culture, gender, knowledge, medicine and the family. Many former Wisconsin PhD students have published books based on their dissertations on topics such as women's movements in India and the politics of sexual harassment.     Princeton University Department of Sociology

    • Princeton University's department of sociology enrolls about 30 to 40 graduate students each year. The department concentrates in six specific fields of study, referred to as "departmental clusters," including sociology of culture, social demography, comparative and regional sociology, social differentiation and inequality, economic sociology and migration and development. Princeton graduate students have the opportunity to lead group discussions in undergraduate courses.     University of Michigan at Ann Arbor College of Engineering

    • The sociology department at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program with eight possible fields of concentration, including culture and knowledge; economic sociology and organizations; gender and sexuality; health, aging and life course; power, history and social change; race, ethnicity and immigration; social demography; and social psychology. The program emphasizes methodology and provides students with a one-year practicum to introduce them to a variety of research methods, including survey, historical, cooperative, qualitative field and quantitative methods. Sociology PhD students can also work toward joint degrees in sociology and social work, public health or women's studies.
