The Fastest Growing Flower Seeds

The Fastest Growing Flower Seeds thumbnail
There are several plants which grow very quickly.

Many flowers bloom quickly, but some, like nasturtiums, sunflowers and zinnias, grow faster than others. Planting them is easy, and they are low-maintenance. Growing zinnias indoors will allow for transplantation as soon as the last frost is over. Nasturtiums and sunflowers are both edible once they begin to grow. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Nasturtiums

    • Nasturtiums germinate quickly and are very easy to care for. If planted in early June, the blooms will appear before mid-summer. The seeds are large and easy to plant; water them once every 10 days. If you pick the flowers, more will grow back in a short time because the plant blooms so quickly. Also, the whole flower - including the seeds - is edible and has a peppery flavor.

    Sunflowers

    • The different varieties of sunflowers are all equally rapid-growing, and need direct sunlight. Sunflowers are easy to plant and fun to watch grow, because they sprout in one to two weeks. Push seeds about an inch into the ground and keep an eye on the flowers when they begin sprouting, as birds and other animals will sometimes try to dig them out. To protect the seeds, put a milk carton or small wire enclosure around them. Water enough to keep the soil damp. When the sunflowers bloom, collect the seeds from the blooms; you can roast and season them to create a snack right from your own garden.

    Zinnias

    • Grow and transplant zinnias after the last frost of the season. When grown indoors, these annuals take six to eight weeks to bloom, but the process is much shorter if you sow them directly in the garden. Plant them in the soil after the last frost of the year, which is also when transplanting takes place if you started the seeds indoors. Water the plants once thoroughly, then lightly every day thereafter.

    Other Considerations

    • The exact time it takes a seed to grow depends on the seed, the weather, the amount of sun it receives, the geographic location and other factors. When you grow a plant indoors with the intention of transplanting it, it will take longer to bloom because it is not receiving direct sunlight. In greenhouses, however, plants grow very well because you control the light and climate.
