Biomedical PhD Programs
Biomedical research is the link between scientific innovation and medical treatments. A doctorate degree in a biomedical field is a gateway to a career in medical and healthcare research. Biomedical scientists work at medical schools, research institutions, hospitals, pharmaceutical labs and biotech companies. They study how molecules, cells, organisms and genetics function and interact to understand how and why illnesses occur. Researchers then use the information to discover or develop treatments and potential cures for diseases.

The University of California at San Francisco offers a doctorate degree in eight biomedical fields: cell biology, immunology, neurobiology, vascular and cardiac biology, human genetics, stem cell biology, tissue/organ biology and virology and microbial pathogenesis. Upon completing a first-year core curriculum, biomedical science (BMS) students begin to specialize and create a curriculum to match their interests. Working with a professor, each student develops an independent course of study that includes elective coursework, research study, thesis lab and a thesis or dissertation. Students can participate in more than 200 laboratories affiliated with BMS to conduct or participate in research projects.

University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio awards biomedical Ph.D. degrees in several biomedical tracks, including biochemistry, molecular medicine, microbiology and immunology, biomedical engineering, cellular biology, pharmacology and physiology. All Ph.D. programs include mentorship programs and experiential opportunities to provide candidates with a real-world perspective and projects. Students take core and elective courses related to their area of specialization, as well as design and conduct independent research to support an original thesis. The school also offers dual-degree programs, including an M.D./Ph.D. degree that combines research with medical training and a D.D.S./Ph.D degree that combines dental school with a biomedical doctorate degree.

Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) offers a number of biomedical Ph.D. programs that emphasize the interdisciplinary aspect of modern biomedical research. The center's Integrated Program in Cellular, Molecular and Biomedical Studies allows students to structure their coursework, work with experts within their field and participate in research in basic and molecular cell biology, microbiology, biophysics, genetics, neurobiology, immunology and others. Candidates conduct independent research to support an original thesis that contributes to the body of scientific knowledge. The program allows students to focus on the biology of specific diseases, including cancer, metabolism and cardiovascular systems. CUMC also offers Ph.D. programs in biomedical informatics and computational biology.
