Types of Computer Crime
With the development of the Internet and the rapid technological growth over the last 20 to 30 years, computer crime quickly turned from a science-fiction fantasy into a cold, hard reality. While generally not physically harmful, computer crime does affect people in the real world in some very real ways. Piracy, illegal hacking and phishing are three types of computer crime of which every computer user should be aware.

Piracy

Internet piracy involves the downloading and distribution of copyrighted media without paying for it. When people download or copy content such as music, books, games and other digital media, they may be infringing on copyright laws. The FBI explicitly states on its official website that "it is a violation of Federal law to distribute copyrighted music, movies, software, games, and other works without authorization." The penalties for copyright infringement are severe, and according to Purdue University, these penalties involve the infringer paying anywhere from "$200 to $150,000 for each work infringed" along with "all attorneys fees and court costs." Jail time is also a possibility.
Illegal Hacking

Hacking can be a serious crime. But keep in mind that not all hacking is illegal. Many people use hacking as a hobby, working within a community of peers to hone their skills. According to Tech World News, "Law enforcement and government agencies in the recent past also relied on programmers turned reformed criminals to test for security leaks and help plug holes to keep out other intruders." Some hackers, however, use their skills to rob people of personal information, invade secure networks and vandalize virtual property. Keeping a firewall in place on your computer and keeping your computer's anti-virus and security software up-to-date helps prevent hackers from accessing your information.

Phishing is a type of computer crime that requires you to keep your head up and pay attention to what you do while online. According to OnGuard Online, "Phishing is a scam where internet fraudsters send spam or pop-up messages to lure personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims." You might get an email one day that appears to be from a big business saying you've won a contest or that it needs further information from you, with a link to what is supposedly the well-known firm's website. Even if the page looks authentic, it could still be a fraud. Never send important personal information over email, be cautious in opening and downloading files unless you're absolutely sure about them and never enter personal information into a pop-up ad or through an email link. Pay attention to your finances, and always keep your computer's firewall, anti-virus and security software up-to-date.

There are many other types of computer crime. "Cyber bullying" is when one person or a group of people harasses another individual over the Internet. Child pornography, which is illegal, is distributed over the Internet. To avoid being taken in by any questionable acts online, think before you click and use sense when surfing the web, checking your email or downloading files to your computer.
