The American Council on Exercise (ACE) offers both online and classroom courses on various aspects of sports nutrition. Classes include Eating Green, Eating for Energy and others focusing on metabolism and weight management, popular diets, sugar and athlete eating disorders. With completion of a series of courses, students earn certification as lifestyle and weight management consultants. Students take exams for certification on specific dates and locations, and the tests consist of multiple-choice questions.

National Federation of Professional Trainers

This professional trainer organization, accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, offers a course leading to a certificate as a sports nutrition specialist. Free if downloaded, there is a fee for materials ordered in print. Students have one year from the date of enrollment to take the test, which they can take at locations throughout the country. Testing appointments are available at the student's convenience, as long as it falls within the one-year time frame. The course features information on digestion, nutrient requirements, nutrition physiology, energy conversion and how foods relate to fitness.

International Sports Sciences Association

Earn a Sports Nutrition certificate by taking courses offered by the International Sports Sciences Association. Courses address issues such frequency of meals, macro nutrient ratios, diet and athletic objectives, as well as the sound science behind nutrition and fitness. Options include both online and home study courses, which are the same fee. All students receive a textbook along with two audio CDs and a glossary of all known foods and supplements and their relationship to human nutrition. Certification exam is not timed and open book. The exam consist of true/false, multiple choice and short answer questions.
