Careers That Require Good Physical Fitness

Job applicants who enjoy working with their hands and keeping physically fit can explore different career options. One of these career options is a correctional officer. Other careers include fire fighters, ground maintenance workers and roofers. There are many other job choices for physically fit employees, but these give an idea of the kinds of jobs available. Each career requires good physical health to prevent self-injuries or injuries to team members.

Correctional Officers

  • Employers hire correctional officers to work with prison and jail populations. These law enforcement officers prevent security breaches, which include attempted prison escapes. Other duties include inspecting prison mail and preparing prison incident written reports. Employers seek applicants who complete a training academy or offer on-the-job training for applicants possessing a bachelor's degree, such as criminal justice or psychology. Applicants should possess good physical health so they are able to break up fights and spend hours patrolling prison grounds. Correctional officers earn an average annual salary of $33,600, according to a May 2010 report by the State University.

  • Firefighters provide protection against fires and emergency situations such as car accidents. Duties involve rescuing trapped survivors or pets, stopping fire from spreading and conducting fire prevention seminars. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that applicants must possess good physical health to pass physical examinations, since they operate fire extinguishers, ladders and chain saws. The BLS shows firefighter applicants often possess a high school diploma and attend a fire department training academy or complete a 2- or 4-year degree in fire science. Firefighters earn an average annual salary of $41,315, according to a May 2010 report by the Career Builder Salary.

Grounds Maintenance Workers

  • Grounds maintenance workers provide cleaning, repair and lawn services to residential and commercial employers. One duty involves repairing park playground equipment, including bleachers and picnic tables. Other duties include mowing lawns, removing snow and painting fences. Employers seek applicants with a high school or general equivalency diploma and offer on-the-job training. These workers require good physical health for bending, pulling and distance walking. Some work environments include private golf courses, community parks and hotels. Grounds maintenance workers earn an average hourly wage between $9.00 and $14.00, according to a May 2010 report by the State University.

  • Roofers repair old roofs and install new roofs. Some roofers become business owners, so additional duties include scheduling roofing work, ordering supplies and submitting invoices. Roofers often possess a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma and get on-the-job training. Roofers can also complete an apprenticeship program with classroom instruction, including mechanical drawing. Roofers require good physical health for carrying roofing materials, climbing ladders and walking across roofs. Roofers who plan on owning a business can complete business courses such as business management. A roofer can earn an average annual salary of $41,035, according to a May 2010 report by the Career Builder Salary.
