Although there are many famous and prestigious universities in the United States, some students choose to attend college in another country to further develop their language skills or cultural understanding. If you're considering attending a university in Germany, or are planning a trip to Germany and wish to visit several historic and famous universities, there are numerous choices throughout the country. These universities feature recent graduates who include some of the greatest thinkers in German history, including Moritz Pasch, Max Born and Johannes Kepler.

  1. University of Tübingen

    • The University of Tübingen is a public university located in Tübingen, Germany. This university, established in 1467, is one of the oldest universities in Germany, and is known primarily for its medicine, natural science and humanities programs. The university is also famous because it is the site of the discovery of DNA by Friedrich Mischer in 1868. Johannes Kepler, a famous German astronomer, also graduated from the university.     University of Giessen

    • The University of Giessen, otherwise known as the Justus Liebig University Giessen, is located in Giessen, Germany. The university was named after Justus von Liebig, a faculty member who invented artificial fertilizer and was a prominent figure in modern agricultural chemistry. The university was established in 1607, and there are approximately 23,000 students enrolled, making it one of the largest universities in Germany.     University of Göttingen

    • The University of Göttingen, which has produced a number of notable graduates, is located in Göttingen, Germany, a famous university town. The university was established by King George II of Great Britain in 1734, and has since earned international attention for its prestigious courses and famous graduates. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the University of Göttingen was ranked the fourth best college in Germany, the 29th best in Europe, and the 90th best university in the world in 2009.
